HISTORY OF GLENCAROL
Ninian & Lester
Shortly before
the Stock Market crash of 1929, a smart young man withdrew his
investments. Using this capital with courage and vision,
he established a small ladies underwear factory in Johannesburg
in 1936. The man was Vernon Schroder and the company he founded was Ninian &
Lester. Today Ninian & Lester Holdings Ltd is the holding company of a
diversified clothing and textile group, with an annual turnover in excess of 500 million rand, employing some 2400
people.
Glencarol - Sock
Division
Founded by two young
entrepreneurs, Phil and Lou Hack, Glencarol produced its first sock on
22nd February 1950. The Company grew and prospered and eventually
re-located to new and larger premises in Babelegi in 1971, where further
expansion continued through to 1987 when the business was sold to Ninian
& Lester. Under new management, Glencarol
continued to expand and grow both in the South African Markets and
Exports.
Glencarol's customer base includes most
of the major retailers in South Africa (Edgars, Woolworths, Mr. Price,
etc.), Government Tenders as well as customers in the United Kingdom,
Europe and the USA.
The factory is situated in Babelegi
Industrial Park, North West Province, approximately
50 km north of Pretoria. The Sales and Marketing Department is based in
Sunninghill on the northern boundary of Johannesburg.
A wide variety of machinery including
Dyeing and Yarn Twisting provides the capacity to produce a wide range
of Men's and Ladies' socks. However, the bulk of capacity is
reserved for Men's sock production. Ranges include Plains, Towelling,
Sports, Outdoor and Electronics.
Yarns used in our sock production
include Cotton, Wool, Acrylic and Polyester, which are knitted with a
bulked Nylon underlay to impart stretch and strength to the socks. All
Nylon and Polyester yarns are supplied by Martilon Textured Yarns,
another division of the Ninian and Lester Group.
